The history of symbols
Task 1 Role of Graphic Design
"Graphic designers create visual designs for their clients and also oversee the production of the design. They use typography, illustration, color, photography and animation for implementation with printing, websites, environmental graphics, video and other means of visual communication. The graphic designer must organize the various elements visually to drive home a desired message"

It does this via television, print (newspapers, magazines, journals etc), radio, press, internet, direct selling, hoardings, mailers, contests, sponsorship, posters, clothes, events, colors, sounds, visuals and even people (endorsements).
Book Design
Book design is the art of incorporating the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various components of a book into a coherent whole.
In the words of Jan Tschichold, book design, "though largely forgotten today, methods and rules upon which it is impossible to improve, have been developed over centuries. To produce perfect books, these rules have to be brought back to life and applied Richard Hendel describes book design as "an arcane subject", and refers to the need for a context to understand what that means.
Brochures
A small book usually having a paper cover
A small, thin book or magazine that usually has many pictures and information about a product, a place, etc.
A brochure is a flyer, pamphlet or leaflet that is used to pass information about something. Brochures are advertising pieces mainly used to introduce a company or organization and inform about products and/or services to a target audience. Brochures are distributed by radio, handed personally or placed in brochure racks. They may be considered as grey literature. They are usually present also near tourist attractions.
Billboards
Large outdoor signboard
A billboard (sometimes also called a hoarding in the UK and many other parts of the world) is a large outdoor advertising structure (a billing board), typically found in high-traffic areas such as alongside busy roads. Billboards present large advertisements to passing pedestrians and drivers. Typically showing large, ostensibly witty slogans, and distinctive visuals, billboards are highly visible in the top designated market areas. Bulletins are the largest standard-size billboards. Located primarily on major highways, expressways or principal arterials, they command high-density consumer exposure (mostly to vehicular traffic). Bulletins afford greatest visibility due not only to their size, but because they allow creative "customizing" through extensions and embellishments.
Product Packaging
Packaging is the technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use. Packaging also refers to the process of design, evaluation, and production of packages. Packaging can be described as a coordinated system of preparing goods for transport, warehousing, logistics, sale, and end use. Packaging contains, protects, preserves, transports, informs, and sells. In many countries it is fully integrated into government, business, institutional, industrial, and personal use.

A poster is any piece of printed paper designed to be attached to a wall or vertical surface Typically posters include both textual and graphic elements, although a poster may be either wholly graphical or wholly text. Posters are designed to be both eye-catching and informative. Posters may be used for many purposes. They are a frequent tool of advertisers (particularly of events, musicians and films), propagandists, protesters and other groups trying to communicate a message. Posters are also used for reproductions of artwork, particularly famous works, and are generally low-cost compared to original artwork.
Greeting Cards
A decorated card with a message of good wishes that is sent or given to someone on a special occasion and a piece of paper or thin cardboard having any of a variety of shapes and formats and bearing a greeting or message of sentiment.
A greeting card is an illustrated, folded card featuring an expression of friendship or other sentiment. Although greeting cards are usually given on special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas or other holidays, they are also sent to convey thanks or express other feeling. Greeting cards, usually packaged with an envelope, come in a variety of styles. There are both mass-produced as well as handmade versions that are distributed by hundreds of companies large and small. While typically inexpensive, more elaborate cards with die-cuts or glued-on
decorations may be more expensive.
Element of Graphic Design
Element of graphic design is a process to create form or its a guide artwork and plan. Also known as Principle of graphic design.
What thing? Which thing or Concept? is Graphic Design?
Actually there is a few important things if we need to do or remember about the best graphic design or learnt about basic graphic design which is :-
Shape
Divide info graphic also knows as an area that is contained within implied line, or is seen and identified because of color or value changes. Shapes have two dimensions, length and width, and can be geometric or free-form. Design in painting is basically the planned arrangement of shapes in a work of art. In a picture, the shapes that the artist has placed are considered the positive shapes. The spaces around the shapes are the negative spaces. It is just as important to consider the negative space in a picture as the positive shapes.
Lines
Lines are used to divide space, direct the eye, and create forms. At the most basic level, straight lines are found in layouts to separate content, such as in magazine, newspaper, and website designs. This can of course go much further, with curved, dotted, and zigzag lines used as the defining elements on a page and as the basis for illustrations and graphics. Often, lines will be implied, meaning other elements of design will follow the path of line, such as type on a curve.
Color
CMYK, RGB
The color element has three properties: hue, intensity, and value. The hue is the type of color such as red, green, orange, and blue. The intensity is a measure of brightness and dullness. The value is how light or dark the color appears. The philosophy and phenomenon of color is described in detail later in this section.
Value
Value is how light or dark an area looks in a design. It is everything from the darkest of blacks through to the brightest of whites. Used correctly it will create depth, contrast and emphasis. The element of value is the darkness or lightness of a surface. It is typically used to represent volume, reveal the presence of a light source, and add realism to depth. Variations in shade are often the result of a light source.
Texture
Another design tool is texture, which officially is defined as the character of a surface. Texture on paper adds dimension, through repeated dots or lines, for example. Be careful when selecting textures; decide if you’re using a textured paper or adding it in the design. Using many different textures can be confusing and work against the overall design of a piece.
Space
Balanced or these is three basic shape types are Geometric (Circles, Squares, Triangles etc.), Natural (leaves, trees, people etc.) and abstract (icons, stylisations and graphic representations). Use carefully to create a visually pleasing design and eye-catching design.
Emphasis
Focus point or main point and also sometimes if the art or design too crowed it'll cost to no focus point. Emphasis is used by artists to create dominance and focus in their work. Artists can emphasize color, value, shapes, or other art elements to achieve dominance. Various kinds of contrast can be used to emphasize a center of interest.
Size
In graphic design, size is used to convey importance, attract attention and create contrast.
Typography
Typography is the art of arranging typefaces, selecting style, line spacing, layout and design as a means of solidifying language. There are many facets to typography, and only a brief investigation will be started here based around some common terms.
- Baseline: The line on which all letters rest.
- Beard line: The line reached by the descenders of lowercase letters.
- Bowl: The round or elliptical parts of a letterform.
- Cap line: The line reached by the top of uppercase letters.
- Counter: The white space enclosed by a letterform, whether completely or partially.
- Extenders: Extenders are the parts of letters that extend either below the baseline (descenders) or above the midline (ascenders).
- Midline: The top of lowercase letters such as a, c, e and the top of the torso of lowercase letters such as b, d.
- Serif: A stroke added to either the beginning or end of one of the main strokes of a letter.
- Stem: The main stroke of a letter that is generally straight and not part of a bowl.
- Topline: The line reached by the ascenders of lowercase letters.
- X-height: The distance between the baseline and midline of an alphabet. The x-height is usually the height of the unextended lowercase letters.
Image
- An iconic mental representation.
- (Jungian psychology) a personal facade that one presents to the world.
- A visual representation (of an object, scene, person or abstraction) produced on a surface
- A standard, typical or perfect example.
- Language used in a figurative or non literal sense.
- Someone who closely resembles a famous person (especially an actor).
- (mathematics) the set of values of the dependent variable for which a function is defined.
- The general impression that something (a person, organization or product) presents to the public.
- A representation of a person (especially in the form of sculpture).
- (computing) an exact copy, e.g. a file that contains a copy of an entire disk drive.

From drawings, paintings and prints to videography, publishing and performance, he produced more than art -- he was essentially his own brand. From haunting black and white self-portraits to Polaroid snapshots of celebrities, many of the photos in the collection later became the inspiration for Warhol's most well-known Pop Art pieces.

Born in Paris, Monet met fellow Impressionists Renoir, Sisley and Bazille while enrolled in the studio of Glenyre. Monet painted outdoors to convey the fleeting effects of atmosphere, time of day, and season upon color and light. He represented natural color like a prism, breaking it down into its individual components. He often painted a series of the exact same view under different light and weather conditions.

Artist Quotes/Statement :-
"Artist a lie that make us realize the truth"
"Unlike in music, there are no child prodigies in painting. What people regard as premature genius is the genius of childhood. It gradually disappears as they get older. It is possible for such a child to become a real painter one day, perhaps even a great painter. But he would have to start right from the beginning. So far as I am concerned, I did not have that genius. My first drawings could never have been shown at an exhibition of children’s drawings. I lacked the clumsiness of a child, his naivety. I made academic drawings at the age of seven, the minute precision of which frightened me"
One of the most-recognized figures in 20th century art, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer. His early success, through the Blue Period (1901-1904) and Rose Period (1904-1906) led to the establishment of Cubism (1909-1912) – one of his major contributions to the art world. Picasso's personal life was as controversial as his work – he was known for his love affairs, often with studio models that became his muses. In addition to his many affairs, he had two wives and four children.

Artist Quotes/Statement
"Art is the vision of the artist, his creation, imagination and expression reflecting the artist's many degrees of feeling. It is an interplay of both emotional and visual expression where the illusions created convey the statements across. And through the different modes of expressions, we are compelled to seek some standard of value to enable us distinguish between them. This distinction is called the transformation of things."
Teng, as he is popularly known, was born in China in 1914, where he studied at the Amoy Art School. Although batik painting has been around for hundreds of years, it is remarkable that no one before Teng had ever thought of adapting this age-old craft as a medium of fine art. Teng first started in this medium in 1953 and therefore he can be considered the father of Batik Painting in Malaysia. According to Frank Sullivan, his productivity in batik painting is enormous...never satisfied, he is always experimenting, seeking to give new depth and range to his batik art ( ' Teng, Master of Batik '-exhibition catalogue, Commonwealth Institute of Art, London 1965).

Artist Quotes/Statement
"I compare my life to a piece of art. I came into this world naked, as if a piece of pure white canvas stretched onto a frame. As I grew, the sketches started to mark out their territories. Then came along the brushes and pallet knives with various colours ready to turn me into a masterpiece! As time progresses, this piece of art will be continuously appraised and criticized by the creator and passers-by. No one can really tell how good a painting is, until the artist finally signs his creation and puts it on display. But the interesting fact is that in life (and even in death) both the creator and the art piece will forever be linked together."
At the age of 33, Ch'ng Huck Theng is the ypungest founder and member in ArtGrup Penang. Author of ' The Surviving Pieces' and ' The Migrating Figuriness', Ch'ng is one fortuitous artist in the story of Malaysian art. Trained under an Australian bush scenery artist, Alan Upton, in the mid 1990s, he believed that the canvas is the depository of his internal monologue by combining his love for antiques and art. Having exhibited in a few joint exhibitions with prominent Malaysian artists, he had his first solo in 2002 sponsored by Cartier in Penang and subsequently with Alliance Francaise de Penang two years later.
